Big oil company propaganda using a heart! Just the free movie we require for Thanksgiving! This 78-minute semi-documentary from 1948 is one of the most lyrical American films ever made. In 1994, The Louisiana Story was selected for preservation inside the United States National Film Registry from the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It is the story of your Cajun boy and his family, living around the bayous in ways of life that we can barely imagine.
The boy's family rents land towards the oil company, which comes in, drills, and leaves everything much like it was, clean and unspoiled other than the family features a little more money. (Yes, it had been funded through the Standard Oil Company.)
The boy spends most of his time on his narrow boat (pirogue), floating down the bayous, prime snake and alligator habitat, together with his pet raccoon. He never wears an existence preserver or shoes... doesn't also have a cell phone to call in case he gets having problems. There is not much story, just a celebration (such stunning grayscale photography that you could well wonder what are the big deal is around color) of an way of life that is certainly no longer around.
All with the actors were amateurs, and for most, this is their only film. As of April 2007, J.C. Boudreaux, who literally boy, was moving into a FEMA trailer along with his wife of fifty-five years, after Hurricane Rita destroyed their property. (source). A black and white silent film that ends which has a woman being burned alive? Oh, yes, what exactly every family needs at Thanksgiving. But, I have 3 good reasons for including The Passion of Joan of Arc on this pair of free movies for Thanksgiving.
First, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was ever made. Second, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was preserved. The director Carl Theodor Dreyer (more) died convinced that the last copy was destroyed. In a little bit of weirdness that sounds more like a movie compared to the truth, a virtually complete print was discovered in 1981 inside a janitor's closet of a Norwegian mental institution.
Finally, I am grateful we can watch this magnificent film, on many lists from the greatest films of them all, for free online at Gloria.tv, a Roman Catholic video site.
Maria Falconetti (more), who plays Joan, suffered an emotional breakdown through the making of the film, and she never made another film. Pauline Kael (more), a notoriously demanding film critic, declared that Falconetti's performance "may are the finest performance ever concerning film."
